Asiad 20: Teqball and Karate Open Vietnam's Account With Two Bronze Medals, Ninth in the Table

Nguyen Hoang Minh Tan and Trinh Gia Nghi stepped onto the court for the mixed doubles Teqball bronze medal match at 11:40 on the morning of September 20, facing India's pairing of Dsouza Quimcy Joaquim and Beg Mohamed Anas Imran. The match ended after two sets, 2-0, with no set lasting beyond twelve rallies. Vietnam's first bronze medal of Asiad 20 came from a sport that very few people in the country could name correctly just a few years ago.

I rewatched the match across four camera angles. The Vietnamese pair won by keeping their unforced error rate low, rather than through flashy finishes. In Teqball doubles, the rules require the two players to alternate touches, with a maximum of three touches per side before sending the ball back across to the opponent's half of the curved table. A handball, or sending the ball off the wrong edge of the table, is penalised immediately. This is a sport where technical discipline outweighs inspiration.

A new sport, a new baseline

Teqball was created in Hungary in 2026, blending elements of football and table tennis on a curved table. Asiad 20 is the first edition to include it as an official event. For a country with no national Teqball league and no referee corps trained to international standards, Minh Tan and Gia Nghi reaching a medal match already exceeds our own baseline.

The same morning, Ba Truong Giang and Le Anh Khoa lost to the Iraqi pair in the men's doubles bronze medal match. Two matches, two opposite outcomes, the same sport, the same day. At Teqball in Asiad 20, the gap between a medal and going home empty-handed came down to very few points.

In Karate, Bui Ngoc Nhi took bronze in the women's individual Kata. She lost 0-5 to host athlete Ono Maho in her opening bout, then beat Choi Haeun of South Korea 5-0 and Leong Wai Yee Shannon of Singapore 4-1. The result extends her record from SEA Games 33 and the Asian youth championships. At Asiad 20, Ngoc Nhi still has a chance for another medal, joining her teammates in the women's team Kata quarter-finals against Nepal on September 22.

After roughly half a day of competition, China led the medal table with 2 golds, 4 silvers and 1 bronze. Athlete Lin Xinyu delivered China's first gold in the women's triathlon. Hosts Japan sat second with 2 golds and 3 bronzes. Macao, South Korea and Kazakhstan each had 1 gold, ranking third through fifth. Vietnam stood ninth with 2 bronzes.

Reading the Kata scorecard through a referee's eye

Ngoc Nhi's record shows three scorelines: 0-5, 5-0 and 4-1, and all three follow a specific judging logic. Modern Kata is scored by a panel of five judges, each holding a flag and choosing the athlete who performed better. To win, an athlete needs a majority, meaning at least three of the five flags. A 5-0 is total consensus. A 4-1 is a split: four judges saw one direction, one saw another.

Placing those three scorelines side by side within a single morning, Ngoc Nhi's judging range stretched from the floor of the scale to its ceiling in under two hours. The bout against Ono Maho came first, before she had settled into rhythm. In the next two, she performed her routine with noticeably sharper speed and tension. A Kata athlete's routine quality shifts with psychological state very quickly, and the five-flag system reflects that shift more sensitively than any technical scoring scale. Reading a Kata record while looking only at the final score means reading half the story.

I never say a referee is wrong. I only say their angle lacked enough light. In Kata, each judge has a single moment to decide, with no slow-motion replay and no image-assist system of the kind football uses. Every slow-motion replay is surgery: cutting correctly, cutting wrongly, but never cutting in haste. In Kata, nobody has a replay. Five people sit at five corners, watch the same routine, and must state a judgement in an instant.

The counter-view: what a bronze medal is measured against

The familiar narrative lists medals and calls it success. That narrative ignores an important variable: the density of the field. A sport introduced to the Asiad for the first time usually draws fewer delegations than disciplines that have featured for dozens of editions. This does not diminish Minh Tan and Gia Nghi's bronze, but it forces an analyst to state both sides when comparing results across sports inside the same medal table.

Based on my experience tracking matches across many different sports, a medal at an event with thirty delegations and a medal at an event with twelve do not carry the same weight. Both are medals. Both require technique. But the probability of winning them differs, and probability is something every coaching staff must build into any resource-allocation calculation.

The same holds for Karate. Kata is a subjectively judged discipline; two judges can read the same routine two different ways without either breaking the rules. I have analysed hundreds of matches decided by human judgement and drawn one conclusion: error in judging rarely comes from dishonesty, it comes from the same object being viewed from dissimilar angles. Accepting that makes the medal table read less like a verdict.

Looking ahead: three scenarios

On September 22, Ngoc Nhi and her teammates enter the women's team Kata quarter-finals against Nepal. This is the clearest door to Vietnam's next medal, based on the balance of strength at this stage. In the first scenario, Vietnam reaches the semi-finals and adds a medal, shifting the Asiad 20 story from a new sport to a traditional one. In the second, the team exits in the quarter-finals, and the two bronzes remain the full haul from the second competition day. In the third, Vietnam's Teqball squad still has openings in other events in the days ahead, after several strong pairs were eliminated early.

The thing worth watching is not today's medal count. It is whether, twelve months from now, Vietnam will have a national Teqball competition system and a referee group trained to standard. The Asiad 20 medal table will be read again many times, as a mirror reflecting an entire system.
