Matheus Cunha (simply known as “Cunha”), born on May 27, 1999, in João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil, is a Brazilian football player who plays as a forward. During his youth, he received football training in Coritiba, Brazil. At the age of 18, he moved to Europe and joined Swiss club Sion. In June 2018, he signed a five-year contract with RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga. In November of the same year, he scored his first Bundesliga goal against his future club, Hertha BSC. In April 2019, his goal against Bayer Leverkusen was named the Bundesliga Goal of the Month and was also nominated for the FIFA Puskás Award. During the 2018–19 UEFA Europa League campaign, he scored 6 goals. In January 2020, as he had mostly played as a substitute for Leipzig during the first half of the season, he transferred to Hertha BSC, a fellow Bundesliga club, signing a “long-term” contract. In August 2021, he joined Atlético Madrid for a fee of approximately €30 million, signing a five-year contract. In January 2023, he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan until the end of the 2022–23 season, with an option for a permanent transfer in the summer of 2023. During the 2023–24 season, he performed impressively: he scored his first Premier League goal and his first FA Cup goal, and also recorded a hat-trick against Chelsea—becoming only the second Wolves player to achieve this in the Premier League, as well as the fourth visiting player to do so at Stamford Bridge. Despite the team’s poor results early in the 2024–25 season, he continued to contribute with multiple goals, including one that helped secure the team’s first win of the season. In December, he was charged by the FA for elbowing an opponent’s staff member in the head and removing his glasses; he was subsequently banned for two matches and fined £80,000. In February 2025, he signed a contract extension until 2029. On June 1, 2025, Manchester United announced that it had reached an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers regarding Cunha’s transfer. The move was finalized on June 12, with the reported transfer fee amounting to £62.5 million.
