Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus and the 2716 Elo milestone: Turkey is waiting for its own Indian wave

People call it a shock; I call it unread data. In the update on June 14, 2026, 15-year-old Turkish chess player Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus reached 2716 Elo and 26th place in the world. He has become the youngest player ever to cross 2700 live rating, after previously setting youngest records for 2600 and for the highest ratings at ages 12, 13, and 14. His rise is not alone. Ediz Gürel, a 17-year-old Turkish talent, is also climbing. Together, they point to a developing youth system in Turkey. Veteran grandmaster Shakhriyar Mamedyarov has even talked about a 2900 target for Erdogmus. Still, the data does not yet include detailed game-level analysis. We do not know how Erdogmus plays against 2750+ opponents, how he handles time pressure, or whether his rating growth came from strong or weak fields. His progress is impressive, but many young prodigies plateau after their initial jump. The real question is whether Turkey can build a lasting chess ecosystem. One player is a story, but only a system can produce sustainable success. Erdogmus may be the spark, but the next five years will determine whether Turkey truly joins the chess elite.
