What I take from this reading is not a list of numbers. It is a question about how this industry prices human time.

When a publisher claims its product is longer than two others combined, it is saying your time is the unit of value. That is a reasonable claim in a one-time-purchase market. But it also raises a question nobody in the industry wants to answer: if value lies in hours, at what point does the hour count become a burden?

In sports, we learned the answer to a similar question. Nobody praises an athlete for playing the most minutes. We praise him for playing exactly the minutes required, at exactly the intensity required, and for arriving intact at the end of the season.

A 30-hour game can be a perfect game. A 50-hour game can be a perfect game. But either can become a game abandoned at hour 22, and in that case the claimed value has nothing to do with the perceived value.

I will return to this once community data appears. Until then, I keep my old principle: no conclusions before three corroborating sources. And I will record this prediction so I can later check myself.

I think the 36-boss density will prove the most contested point. If I am right, I will say so plainly. If I am wrong, I will correct it, and I will rewrite the entire pacing section without keeping any face.
