Vietnamese Billiards in a Data Drought: When the Rolling Ball Has No Numbers to Listen to

When I opened the first data file of the season, it was empty. No player names, no match codes, no cue-angle records, no total points, no notes about how long a cueist sat before returning to the table. That emptiness reminded me of a cue ball frozen on the cushion. The table and the audience were ready, but the real match had not started because nothing had touched the ball yet. For more than four decades of watching billiards, I have seen Vietnam transform from a place where billiards was considered a sidewalk game into a country producing some of the world's finest three-cushion players. Names like Tran Quyet Chien, Bao Phuong Vinh and Nguyen Tran Thanh Tu have become familiar in international contender lists. Yet the more Vietnamese players succeed abroad, the clearer the domestic data gap becomes. International matches are documented in detail; domestic events often leave only a scoreline and some blurry photos. My point is not that emotions should be replaced by spreadsheets. My point is that emotions need to be tested. A beautiful six-point shot may be a product of natural talent, but understanding why it happened requires measuring the angle, the cue-ball contact, the spin and the position left for the opponent. Without that discipline, we are repeating myths, not learning technique. There is a blind spot in Vietnamese billiards today: effort is praised but not always measured correctly. Playing ten hours a day is not meaningful if the same wrong stroke is being repeated endlessly. Data should not be a tool for formal praise. It should reveal invisible bottlenecks. A young player who defeats domestic rivals by instinct will struggle abroad, where opponents know exactly how many shots he missed from a certain angle. I am not dismissing the passion of Vietnam's billiards community. Clubs have invested in international-standard tables, and coaches work hard every day. But the absence of structured statistics makes youth training a groping process. It is time to build a library of matches where every shot is attached to its path, angle, speed and outcome. When data becomes large enough, we will no longer argue about who is better through guesswork; we will follow each cueist's progress across the years. Some people say billiards is an art of the moment that cannot be locked into charts. I partly agree, but artists also understand their materials. A painter studies color, composition and light. A billiards player must study cushions, force and rebound angles. If we record those insights systematically, the next generation will not start from nothing. They will stand on the shoulders of successful shots. The empty data file I saw earlier was not completely useless. It told the story of a transition. Vietnamese billiards already has talent, titles and public attention. What remains missing is an infrastructure to measure, store and pass on those assets as knowledge. If that does not happen, the country will keep enjoying short bursts of brilliance without knowing how to reproduce them. The players competing today owe the next generation more than medals. They owe them data. Only then will the rolling ball truly be heard, not just by the heart but also by the mind.
