2026 Chess Olympiad schedule released: India look to defend titles in Samarkand

FIDE has announced the official schedule for the 46th Chess Olympiad. The event will take place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, in September 2026, featuring 11 rounds in both the Open and Women’s sections under the Swiss system. Defending champions India will try to retain both titles in a city that once stood at the heart of the Silk Road. According to the FIDE schedule, players will compete in six consecutive rounds before a rest day. The remaining five rounds will then complete the tournament. The final round is set to begin at 11:00 local time, earlier than normal rounds, to allow the closing ceremony to be held on the same day. This is a familiar arrangement at recent Olympiads, giving organizers enough time for the closing formalities before teams leave. In the Open section, India field an exceptionally strong team.
